Writers are rock stars, right? Of course we’d agree! Well, sometimes, rock stars are writers too. Bob Dylan’s a singer songwriter to some, a pure poet to many others.
In a night to remember, the Emerging Writers’ Festival will explore the differences and similarities between writing and music, how they are practiced and how they inform each other. Is there an inherent musicality to writing and what would great songwriting be without its literary qualities?
Turn The Words Up Loud is a dynamic panel discussion with live performance. Join us as the Emerging Writers’ Festival goes electric, goes live and goes loud!
Featuring poet and songwriter LUKE BEESLEY, the legendary DAVE GRANEY, former Frente! singer-songwriter and memoirist ANGIE HART, and novelist and musician ALICE MELIKE ÜLGEZER Hosted by ALICIA SOMETIMES.

GABRIEL LYNCH 'Dependent State' EP Launch with special guests WHITAKER, ESTHER HOLT and LEADLIGHT
$10.00 on the door
Australian troubadour, Gabriel Lynch, returns to Australia after his hugely successful tour of Asia to present songs from his new mini-album, Dependent State. After wooing audiences throughout an extended tour of Australiasia in 2012, Lynch will take to the stage at The Toff in Town with a brand new seven piece band. With a full rock ensemble behind him for the first time in three years, Lynch will once again demonstrate the vibrancy and energy that earned him the accolade of possessing "one of the best Aussie male voices you've never heard" (BMA Mag, Australia).
The independent musician has performed at festivals internationally alongside the likes of Elbow, The Whitlams, and Architecture in Helsinki and has often been found sharing the stage with long-time musical colleagues and rising indie stars, Charles Lim (Singapore) and Svavar Knutur (Iceland). At age 25, he has toured extensively throughout Australia, Asia and Europe, garnering the title of “Australia’s Damien Rice, minus the cheese” (Iceland National Radio).
Dependent State, which features the lead single "Another Apology”, is Lynch's most evocative and intricate release to date. His extraordinary lyrics document episodes of guilt, emancipation and, in the case of the tumbling centrepiece “What Friends Are For”, even murder. The record demonstrates Lynch’s prowess as a songwriter and storyteller and is carried by his unorthodox and delicate guitar work and distinctive baritone.
Watching Lynch in concert is like "being regaled by a solemn bard with a series of absorbing tales" (Rave Magazine, Australia). His music is "sweet, darling and emotionally charged" (The Grapevine) and he is just as likely to inspire a spontaneous sing-along as he to reduce his audience to complete silence.

PRETTY STRANGERS with special guests PRETTY CITY and MALLEE SONGS
$10.00 on the door
History is strewn thick with evidence that a truth is not hard to kill, but a lie, well told, is immortal." - Mark Twain
To say that Pretty Strangers have redefined how we understand melody, counterpoint and the very acts of living and loving is akin to proclaiming that the Earth does indeed rotate on its axis. It is an irrefutable and immutable truth, which no one can deny. No one.
From when Pretty Strangers was but a twinkle in Ed Sharp-Paul's moist eyes, to when we were simultaneously confused and elated when "The Minotaur" totalled more votes in the Hottest 100 than the estimated population of the world, we have been existing in a state of Rapture, unlikely to be paralleled again on this mortal coil.
But all good things must end, and perfect things even more so. Five will become four after tonight's show, with brothers-in-arms Mallee Songs and Pretty City ever faithful by our sides. And while the Gods may weep at Terry Mann's departure, let us not be sad, dear friends, let us instead be together, and stare into each other's eyes, and scream, "Yes, I am a human being, and yes, I am alive!

Goldentone has received many warm critical hugs since its release late 2012. The Age called it “deceptively nuanced” and Inpress singled out ITW as the potential “local pop band of 2013”. After a packed album launch in March, now’s the time to check out what all the fuss is about and get yourself a piece of that sweet vinyl action. Come to the Toff, it’ll be tastier than velvet pancakes and more powerful than an army of didgeridoos.

RAPSKALLION with special guests DAWN
$15.00 + $3.30 BF = $18.30 online presales / $20.00 on the door
With fire in their bellies, and confetti in their pockets, Rapskallion have swashbuckled their way back from their European escapades, to seduce you this summer with their own brand of wild junkyard waltzes, take me tangos, rambunctious punk rock polkas and old world romance. Dressed in the...ir tattered tails and decrepit hobo finery, the ‘Skallions are back on Australian shores and invite you to their ‘When The Wine Kicks In' Tour. Think Tom Waits in a torn tutu, singing Edith Piaf songs through a megaphone, backed by the Muppet show band, sailing the high seas on a Spanish galleon.
With a treasure chest full of musical instruments, and a flair for the theatrical, Rapskallion have entertained audiences worldwide, with their unique concoction of vaudevillian cabaret dance tunes.
Laugh, dance, drink, and be merry, ladies and gentlemen … roll up for the show!
DAWN is a band of neo-victorian-clad musical renegades if you will, on a mission to conquer a world filled with synthesised noise in various shades of grey and beige. They perform to invoke the voices and spirits of their ancestors, to take you back to a time when the skies were filled with trails of steam and visitors from far and wide were making their way across the seas to new and exotic lands. While the vocals may at times be soothing, the band is high in intensity- weaving together intricately textured sounds of the west, with a strong hit of spice from the east. Expect to see a stage filled with rib-popping corsets, top hats (with strapping long-haired lads in them), exquisite multi-layered garments crafted by Clockwork Butterfly, stroh violins, a shahi baaja. And a mustachio.

VAUDREY (USA) with special guests BOYEUR
$10.00 + $3.10 BF = $13.10 / $10.00 on the door.
Cellist and songwriter Vaudrey thinks fragility is beauty, beauty is an accident, and an accident is dub delay soaked Bach shimmering on a bed of grinding analog synthesizer. Somewhere in the realm of Arthur Russell, James Blake, and the folk songs of old, Vaudrey lives in a world where machines and hand crafted wooden masterpieces are one. Intangibly placed, this post-chestral, bedroom dub folk pop, is the revival of real musicianship, studied then unthought.
No stranger to the big stage, now residing in Brooklyn, New York, Vaudrey is the project of Australian born cellist and song writer, Rich Vaudrey. With a Doctorate in the performance of classical and improvisational cello whilst acting as Teaching Assistant to the Emerson String Quartet, Rich regularly plays in both classical, new music and fusion jazz groups throughout New York City, having performed at venues including Carnegie hall, 92Y Tribecca, the Stone, Alice Tully Hall and the Harvey Theatre, BAM.
In anticipation of his debut release in 2014 Vaudrey presents showcases in New York City, Melbourne and Sydney of original works and transcriptions from the late Arthur Russell.
